Emily Squires was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts 2012 candidate at Washington University in St. Louis and received a BFA in Printmaking and a BA in Education through the Arts from the University of Michigan. She has participated in workshops with the Urban Bush Women’s Summer Leadership Institute (New Orleans, LA), the North House Folk School (Grand Marais, Minnesota), the Center for Digital Storytelling (San Francisco, CA), and the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (New Orleans, LA).

Prior to pursuing graduate studies, Emily worked for the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. As an educator and then administrator, she worked in the art education department for the ArtWorks! program, which partnered with social service agencies to build youth leadership through arts-based programming. Whether working with a papermaking collective in Johannesburg, South Africa or teaching young artists at the Missouri Fine Arts Academy in Springfield, MO, Emily’s multidisciplinary practice investigates themes such as voice, participation, and love.

She is currently an advisor and artist in residence with Growing American Youth, a local social service non-profit serving LGBTQ youth.
